Photo 101
Have a camera and don't know how to use it? Let's get off manual mode and create beautiful photos!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Photo 101 is for beginners with little or no experience in photography. Many semi-professionals have taken this class as a refresher course and have really enjoyed it.
In class, you will learn how to work your DSLR camera using manual settings. A large portion of the class will focus on exposure and composition. Shooting with natural light will be encouraged and instructed.
HOW IT WORKS
Learning is divided into 4 weeks and within those weeks you can learn at your own pace, anytime, anywhere. There are no set class times, though homework is due every Sunday night for instructor feedback. Students also have unlimited email access to the instructor for the duration of their course, to ask questions or get help when they’re stuck. Our classes are flexible, fit into most any schedule and we happily welcome international students!
PREREQUISITES
Photo 101 has no prerequisite courses. You will get the most out of the course materials if you are shooting with a DSLR (Nikon, Canon, etc.). But any camera that allows you to change the shutter speed and aperture will work.
WHY OUR STUDENTS LOVE PHOTO 101
“Attending Nicole’s class was empowering! I loved learning how to have complete control over my camera!”
- Chelsea Fuss of Frolic!
“Nicole’s class gave me practical tips to take my photos to the next level.”
- Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day
“I liked the fact that the course is only four weeks long and through my weekly homework assignments I was able to get feedback from Nicole on ways to improve. Nicole really emphasizes shooting clean and not to rely on Photoshop to improve your image. I still have a lot to learn but I think it finally “clicked” that photography is no different than any other creative field, the more you practice, the better you get. And I have to say the class has helped increase the number of good shots I am getting straight out of the camera, without any Photoshop tweaks… Even though the class is over I want to continue to shoot on a regular basis so I can improve my skills and continue documenting life.”
- Sally Shim of Sally J Shim
“The class structure is great because there is a video for each week’s lesson, but you can also read the information instead of just watching it… If you’re looking for a course to start shooting in manual, or just to improve your photography skills in general (composition is covered as well), I’d definitely recommend Nicole’s Photo 101 class.”
- Nicole Balch from Making it Lovely
“Thank you so much for this class! Thanks for your amazing feedback: starting with the positive, and when necessary, ending with tactful, honest, awesome advice. My camera returned and I can’t wait to get out shooting today. You have inspired us all.”
- Judy
“Thank you so much — I am really enjoying the Photo 101 class at the moment. I have learned so much already and can’t wait to learn even more. Now my manual button is not screaming “achtung” to me & is not daunting anymore! :-) I have rediscovered my camera & passion for photography again — spent past 8 yrs raising 2 small children & have experienced several international moves due to my husband’s job. Now we are truly settled indefinitely and I am keen to learn as much as I can to hopefully, one day turn my passion into a career. I absolutely love your style & creativity – your photos are beautiful & unique. Again, have been completely inspired by this beginners course & has gotten my creative juices flowing again.”

“I have loved taking photos for as long as I can remember, but I was always so intimidated to switch the dial to manual. With the gentle push of a friend, I finally got the courage to take an online photo class at Nicole's Classes. I was so thankful I did! Push yourself out of your comfort zone and take that leap of faith. You’ll never regret trying something new or pursuing your passion.”
